The Turner Law firm is offering the following service to local families with high school seniors.  Many people are unaware that once your child reaches 18 and is considered an adult, should there be any kind of medical emergency, you may not be able to obtain any information from a doctor and/or hospital or make medical decisions for your adult child.  We have unfortunately seen this play-out and wanted to bring awareness to it and provide meaningful assistance.

We will prepare, pro bono (no charge), a Medical Power of Attorney (MPOA) for your child age 17 or older.  Note that they are our client, must agree to us creating the medical power of attorney, and provide the name of at least 1 individual they wish to have as their ‘Agent’.  A MPOA is a legal document which allows an individual to appoint a person they trust to have access to medical information and to make vital healthcare decisions in the event of incapacitation due to an illness, injury, or accident.  Our engagement is strictly limited to providing the MPOA and no other services.

Our process and what we recommend:

Upon receiving the required information, we will create the MPOA and send it via email to the requested contact.  We will schedule a phone call with the student to discuss.  Then, the MPOA must be signed.  The document MUST be properly signed or is not valid.

While not mandated in the state of Colorado, notarizing the MPOA, having it witnessed, or both can strengthen its validity and avoid challenges perhaps from another state where the requirements are stricter.

We strongly urge you to provide us with an electronic copy of the signed MPOA that we can keep in our file.   People often cannot find the MPOA in the midst of an emergency.  If we have a copy scanned to our file, we can email it to wherever it might be needed.

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY STUDENTS: WE WILL ATTEND THE MAY 21, 2025 AWARDS NIGHT AND BE AVAILABLE ONE HOUR BEFORE TO NOTARIZE YOUR MPOA. IF AGE 17, WE WILL PROVIDE A SECOND MPOA TO EXECUTE ONCE YOU TURN 18.
